about

All roads lead to black decay (Georg Trakl)

At the outbreak of the World War I, the Austrian poet and chemist Georg Trakl was called up and was sent as Dispensing Officer in the Medical Corps with the rank of Lieutenant to the front in Galicia. After the bloody battle at Grodek, Trakl was left to care for ninety wounded soldiers throughout two days and two nights, without help and medical supplies. Outside, in the square, there were the Ruthenian peasants hanging from the trees. In the agony of his despair, Trakl attempted to kill himself in front of his fellow officers but was disarmed and restrained. He died on the night between the 3th and the 4th of November 1914 of an overdose of cocaine, in the psychiatric ward of a military hospital in Krakow. Almost certainly it was a suicide.
