about

'Losing one's shadow was viewed in pre-modern times as a curse: vampires had no shadows (as they could not show up in a mirror), nor possessed ghosts a shadow. A romantic novel reflects this belief: Peter Schlemihl sells his - supposedly worthless - shadow to the devil... and troubled by the immanent feeling of loss of his personality tries then during his whole life to regain his shadow, but in vain.'

"Our shadow is often subconscious, hidden even from our own awareness. It takes effort and life-long practice to look for, find, and embrace what we dismiss and what we disdain. After spending so much energy avoiding the appearance of failure, it will take a major paradigm shift in consciousness to integrate our shadow. One of the great surprises on the human journey is that we come to full consciousness precisely by shadowboxing, facing our own contradictions, and making friends with our own mistakes and failings."

Falling Upward, Richard Rohr, OFM

Technical notes on the album:

Fabio had sent me an improvisation on a drone that I had emailed him for the "Scott Lawlor And Friends 4" album but since I changed the theme and deadline of the album, I thought it better to repurpose the track for another project, to which he was agreeable.
I imported the original collaboration into the Native Instruments sampler on the komplete kontrol keyboard, creating an even darker and longer dronescape. I improvised over that with a number of instruments such as Bioscape from Luftrum, extreme Vocal Environments, alien Skies and Deep Impact made by zero-g, Vento Modern Woodwinds by Heavyocity, Raw Strings by Sudden Audio and the percussion is from Damage 1 also created by Heavyocity.
I wanted to create a journey that started calm, grew with intensity and then came back to a less intense but still dark conclusion as a way to reflect on the visitation with what were, perhaps, previously unknowable parts of the shadow self which required exploration.

Scott Lawlor.
